Basal Ganglia

He talks about the function of the basal ganglia as self regulating element for the PMC which relays signals back to the PMC to undertake an action or not.

motor functions

  • it helps the motor cortex select what movements to undertake and which to keep. it does this by either signalling the internal globus pallidus or the external globus pallidus
  • it helps regulate initiation, scaling and sequencing
  • abnormal functioning leads to parkinsons or huntingtons.

Cognitive/psychological functions includes

  • helps prefrontal cortex to organise thoughts
  • helps limbic system to organise emotions
  • reward mediated learning, and attentions
  • abnormal functioning leads to
    • drug addiction
    • adhd
    • psychosis
    • plus what was already mentioned in parkinsons and huntingtons

Cerebellum

the structure of the cerebeullum suggests it as a caluclation machine, where it has 2 inputs and 1 output

it likelt calculates prediction and what is liekly to happen next

it helps plan movement, correction and motor learning

disorders of the cerebellum include atacia intention tremor dysmetric nystagmus and titubation.
