Types of facial sensory information discriminative sensation pain temerature, crude touch proprioception
main nerve involved in facial sensation is trigeminal nerve
all are
- trigeminal
- Facial nerve (also does muscels of facial expression)
- glossopharyngeal n
- vagus and cr XI
1st order neurons are in trigeminal sensory root 2nd order neurons are within the sensory trigeminal nuclear complex
3 divisions of trigeminal nerve area
- opthalmic
- maxillary
- mandibular
and corneal reflex
opthalmic area is important as if you get a viral infection you can lose your eye
the ear is alo innervated by cr X + Vii

Facial nerve sensation
internal acoustic meatus internal meatus geniculate ganglion then greater petrosal nerve and other
Sensory trigeminal (V) nuclear complex
- mesenchephalic nucleus proprioception (mostly jaw)
- pontine nucleus light touch vibration
- nucleus of spinal tract of V upper 1/3 light touch lower 2/3ds pain temp extends down to like c7
i think facial, glossopharangeal and X + crXI also go into the STNC
