This is where there is a thing that is in the brain, and it increases pressure in the brain, leading to herniation and other issues.
These lesions can be tumours, hematomas (covered in Stroke and Traumatic brain injury, or abscesses
This is due to the mass effect (just have ing mass to push stuff away) as well as usually brain oedema also accompanying it. Often the oedema is vasogenic, from disruption of the BBB and extravaseation of fluid.
Herniation is already touched upon in TBI but some other SOL symptoms are:
- A lesion in the motor cortex can cause contralateral motor dysfunction
- Visual disturbances from a pituitary tumour impinging on the optic chiasma
- A lesion of the frontal lobe can lead to behavioural changes.
Tumours
We will touch on this extensively
Abscesses
