Volumes and flow

Link to Glossary Symbols of Respiratory Physiology Most of this lecture is defining the volumes and capacities of the spirometry tests etc Not much in it other than what it is along with FEV1/FVC results

Probably should have called this the spirometry lecture (Most of the content introduced here is in the glossary)

Pulmonary function tests (Spirometry)

Spirometry tests how much air you breath in and out and can be used to figure out lung volumes as well as exhalation rates.

Forced measurements

Forced measurements give info about flow and can show obstructive function: Forced vital capacity (FVC) is how much you output with maximal intake to maximal output. Forced expiratory volume is the volume lost within one second of this manoeuvre.

FEV1/FVC ratio defines obstructive dysfunction. I think over 0.7 is an obstructive result.
